Pammie’s Beginnings

“When did you realize decorating and baking cakes is something you could or even wanted to do?" is the question that any childhood friend asks me with a puzzled look on their face as they scroll through my photo galleries on Facebook or Instagram. Let me try to tackle that question here.

I have always loved art in every form. As a child, I would write stories and illustrate them. I loved painting, drawing, and writing poems. I remembered that I always thought my sister was so talented. She once had a project in high school to create an imaginative picture of the alphabet.

For her project, she hand painted the entire alphabet, with each letter being a different fish. It sounds unusual, but I vividly remember it being so beautiful. I think it’s safe to say that I looked up to my sister and, looking back, this painting made a big impression on me.

From that point on, I found myself doodling fish and learning how to draw different animals. I looked back and realized that several aspects of my life, creatively speaking, can be attributed to the admiration that this little sis had for her big sister. Thank you, Sissy (aka Kristy).

Another person I have to thank for my artistic abilities is my grandmother who I lovingly referred to as Mimi. She was as crafty they came. Mimi made doilies, Christmas ornaments, beaded jewelry, and even handmade clothes. She always had her hands busy making what my siblings and I could not understand and most certainly did not appreciate (Sorry, Mimi).

It wasn’t until she was gone and I was three kids deep in my home that I stumbled upon my gift of baking and decorating. Unlike my sister, my grandmother’s influence is most likely genetic. I never got the opportunity to craft with her. I know that would've been fun for the both of us.

So, long story short, I have always realized my love for creative works. As for baking, I honestly never thought I'd see the day that I’d love cooking anything. I would've thought I'd have a piece of art hanging in some gallery or a book sitting on someone's shelf. But baking….nope, I never would've guessed it.

One day, I told my husband that I wanted to make a pretty cake and his response was ‘Okay, babe. If you want to, then do it.’ That level of support is the true definition of our marriage and this partnership. So I did. I made my sis a birthday cake, and it was a hit! From then on, I was hooked.

I started buying different pans and tools. All my extra time was spent watching YouTube tutorials and Pinterest-surfing! Before I knew it, I was making cakes for neighbors, coworkers, friends, families, and so on. Word of mouth is the root of our business, which we are so proud of. So that’s it in a nutshell, friends. That’s my tale of how Pammie Cakes began.”
